In Depth Gilding and Patination

Course description

In this 5 day class with David J Marks we will explore the Art of Gilding and Chemical Patination which involves working with various metal leafs and creating endless varieties of surfaces by working with mild acids to create Patinas. Each student will receive eight sample boards that have been prepared for gilding. Students are also welcome to bring in projects that they would like to work on. These could be wood vessels or bowls,ceramic pottery,picture frames etc. We will be working with the following metals : Copper leaf, Genuine Silver leaf, Composition Gold, some Genuine Gold leaf, Aluminum leaf and some variegated leaf. We will also be working with a frisket material which is a clear masking plastic with an adhesive backing and allows us to cut out patterns for precision gilding. Additional layers of color can be added using mica powders and dyes which can be sealed in with thin coats of lacquer. This will be a non-stop fun and extremely creative class! All tools and materials will be provided and this class is suitable for all skill levels.
